Definition of Tolerance

Drivers who consume alcohol may have a deterioration of their physical and mental capabilities. Alcohol consumed in large quantities may damage organs, impair driving, cause alcoholism, and interfere with medications.

Drivers who frequently consume large amounts of alcohol may develop tolerance to the alcohol which means they will have to drink larger quantities of alcohol to produce the same effect on their body. Scientific studies have identified many types of alcohol tolerance including functional tolerance, which allows the driver to compensate for functional deterioration of their mental or physical capabilities, acute tolerance, learned tolerance, environmental dependent tolerance and metabolic tolerance.
