Definition of Pleading

A pleading is a written statement which is filed by the plaintiff and defendants and will decide the issues which need to be reviewed and settled by the court. Plaintiffs involved in a civil claim will file a complaint, which is the first pleading. The complaint will initiate the civil lawsuit. For some civil claims the complaint is called a petition and whoever files the complaint is called the petitioner.
