Definition of Nystagmus

Nystagmus is the jerking and involuntary movement of the eyes. Horizontal nystagmus is the most common type, but nystagmus can also be circular or vertical. Nystagmus can be acquired through disease or head trauma or it can be genetic. Nystagmus causes a wide range of symptoms including: loss of vision, reduced reading ability, reduced depth perception, difficulty climbing stairs or moving on uneven surfaces, reduced confidence, lack of eye contact, reduced mobility and the inability to drive.
